Orientation & Placement
Every Scholar Starts in Exactly the Right Place.
Before Week One ever unlocks, C84 gets to know your scholar. A friendly orientation and a five-part diagnostic build an individual learner profile — so instruction fits the scholar from day one, instead of the scholar having to fit the program.
Step One: Orientation
Orientation happens first — no scholar is assessed before they feel comfortable in the platform.
Student Welcome
A warm, scholar-friendly introduction to C84 and what the next eight weeks will feel like.
Platform Walkthrough
Scholars learn exactly where lessons, assignments, and mastery checks live inside their USI dashboard.
Device & Audio Test
A quick check that recording, playback, and reading tools work before any assessment begins.
Academic Honesty
A simple, age-appropriate agreement: do your own best work so placement reflects the real scholar.
Reading Confidence Inventory
Scholars share how they feel about reading — confidence data shapes coaching, not grades.
Step Two: The Five-Part Diagnostic
The placement assessment looks at five separate reading skill strands — because a scholar is never just one number.
Phonics & Decoding Diagnostic
Identifies how a scholar attacks unfamiliar words — the foundation every other skill builds on.
Vocabulary Diagnostic
Measures word knowledge, context-clue use, and word-part reasoning across grade-band vocabulary.
Comprehension Diagnostic
Checks central ideas, evidence, inference, and summary across leveled passages.
Fluency Sample
A recorded reading sample capturing accuracy, phrasing, rate, and expression — growth is tracked over time, never speed alone.
Writing Baseline
A short constructed response establishing where claim, evidence, reasoning, and conventions begin.
Then: An Automatic Learner Profile
Results generate an individual competency profile and Individual Learning Plan — and Week One of the eight-week journey unlocks with material matched to your scholar.
Grade Context + Competency Band
C84 never runs identical content under different grade labels. Placement uses two dimensions at once: the scholar's grade context (Grade 4, 5, or 6) and an instructional competency band for each skill strand. A Grade 6 scholar may be On-Level in vocabulary while receiving intervention support in decoding and accelerated work in comprehension — all inside the same plan.
Intervention
Targeted rebuilding of foundational skills with additional instructor support.
Approaching
Close to grade-level expectations — focused practice closes specific gaps.
On-Level
Meeting grade-level expectations — instruction deepens and extends mastery.
Accelerated
Beyond grade-level expectations — enrichment and extension keep scholars challenged.
Assessment content, cut scores, and fluency norms are set and reviewed by USI academic leadership and qualified literacy specialists. Placement is a starting point, never a label — bands are re-evaluated as mastery data comes in each week.
