The Journaling Pillar
Writing Changes Lives — On the Scholar's Terms
Guided journaling is one of Beyond Breakfast's core pillars. Scholars write with structured prompts, build a habit of honest reflection, and decide for themselves what — if anything — to share with their mentor.
Enrolled scholars journal from their dashboard — entries support moods, tags, and per-entry sharing.
Five Prompt Categories
Staff-curated prompts keep the habit fresh and age-appropriate. Scholars can also free-write any time.
Reflection
Looking back honestly at the week — what worked, what was hard, and what it taught you.
Gratitude
Naming the people, moments, and opportunities you are thankful for.
Goals
Writing goals down, breaking them into steps, and tracking your own follow-through.
Challenge
Working through something difficult on paper before working through it in life.
Community
Reflecting on service, leadership moments, and how you show up for others.
Five Visibility Rules We Never Break
Private by default
Every journal entry belongs to the scholar. Entries are private unless the scholar chooses otherwise.
Optional mentor sharing
A scholar can choose to share a specific entry with their matched mentor — entry by entry, never all-or-nothing.
No silent reading
Mentors only see entries a scholar has explicitly shared. There is no back door into private writing.
Safety escalation
If shared writing raises a safety concern, trained program staff follow the published safety and escalation policy — always in the scholar's best interest.
Supervised, audited access
Program supervisors access journal data only where policy authorizes it, and access is recorded in an audit trail.
Journaling Lives in the Scholar Dashboard
Enrolled scholars write, tag, and (optionally) share entries with their mentor from one secure place.
